Math is important because it is the most widely used subject in the world. Think about it, every profession uses some sort of math. From the engineer to the waiter at the restaurant who counts the change, knowledge of some sort of math is essential. In this day and age, many professions actually depend on math. Math is also one of the most important subjects at school. A kid that doesn’t do well in math will probably have difficulty becoming successful in school.

Everyone learns in three ways – visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), and kinesthetic (hands-on). Most people have a preferred learning style, or favor a blend of two. Try to study math using approaches that fit your style. If you’re unsure how you like to learn, try all of these ideas and keep what works best for you.

Want to play chess. Many of us do not care about mental math games, or care if we play a strategy game. The potential for winning and developing character through playing a strategy game is tremendous. If you are a potential chess player develop a mindset winning, do not get caught up in fearing to fail. Get over it, realize that you will fail at times, but use chess problems as a stepping stone to make changes in your thinking so you will have a desire to do your best, develop the best game strategy that you can, p195699 (http://forum.kpn-interactive.com/) and start winning. Many players really believe they cannot win. That is not applying good math concepts or even life principles because it is not based on truth. There will be players that are better than you, but not everyone and not every time. Think about that.

Play this game often and your child will become more flexible and logical in his or her thinking. He or she will automatically look for different ways to solve a difficult problem.

Take Ron Berger’s middle-school math project to study levels radon in their own homes. Studying radon is boring. But Berger’s class project has got to be one of the most compelling projects in math class history. What if his students discovered dangerous levels of radon in the homes of one geographic area and published the results as they had intended? What would happen to real estate values in that area? What he found is that students were highly engaged in mapping, taking averages, looking at standard deviations- students that heretofore didn’t care one bit about radon or the other concepts.

In the west we have this thinking that math is not important but that is not true. math increases the ability to logical thinking and who can say that logical thinking is bad for humans.

My first tip: Make sure that your child has a breakfast before they start their day. Research has shown that your child will be more ready to learn if their nutritional needs are meet. It is hard to concentrate on learning anything if their belly is rumbling with hunger.

There is nothing more certain than seeing the culture of a math class decline over a period of years when a teacher bribes them. The intent of the teacher, of course, is good. A teacher cares about his or her students and wants the very best for them. “I don’t care how they learn math,” one teacher said to me. “I just want them to learn it so that they are prepared.” The teacher cared enough to purchase candy out of her own pocket, but the real message to students is this: the “positive reinforcement” of candy means “math isn’t worth doing on its own.” The research is clear on the matter too, and shows us that extrinsic, non-relevant rewards hurt learning.

The seventh idea for 10 ways to make learning math more fun is to let them help you cook. This will teach them about measurement, and how different cooking measurements are different than normal measurements.
